Last year I had the opportunity to get paid to write my very first book.

A friend of mine wanted to get her stories as a nurse and the hidden truths about the medical system out to the world. She didn’t have the time or skills to put her thoughts, stories, and messages together but she knew I was a writer and asked for my help.

I gladly accepted the offer as a budding writer trying to get my career off the ground. We agreed that $25/hour to write the book was fair since this was my first book and there would be a fair amount of research and interviewing involved. It seemed like a great deal to me at the time and since I was taking the winter off from working in Yosemite, I had all of my time to devote to this book.

I threw myself in head first. We had agreed on a 6-month deadline for a 100-page book. I finished it in 4. I loved the research aspect of it and how I could weave her stories in between the research and bring it to life. I looked forward to our meetings at the health food coffee shop down the street from my house. I would ask her questions that would spark her memories, reliving story after story about her time in the emergency room and how many injustices she had seen working in the medical field.
