I get caught up

in society’s expectations

in “success” and such interpretations

of what life should be.

Striving to do more, be more, see more

So much that I lose my innocence

lose touch with my true essence

I fall short in my own self-assessments.

A great man reminded me

to slow down, calm down

don’t let myself get run down

enjoy the journey while it lasts.

Always will there be issues

reach for the silver lining

keep on gold mining

for those nuggets of joy.

I’m learning to reject

the insanity of modern life

a society that profits from strife

media that encourages the fight.

Our emotions are manipulated

by those that wish to

profit from our pain

to keep us insane

like animals locked in a cage.

The only way out is in
